DOMINIQUE PERRAUL
TMORCEAUX CHOISIS
22 January - 9 March 2003
Triennale, Milan

The exhibition, that principally aims to present Dominique Perrault’s most important projects, inspires a debate on the current state of the world of contemporary architecture, in an attempt to promote an encounter between its representatives, invited to measure swords with Perrault’s contribution.

Sobriety, transparency, a “clean” spatial approach and an immediate accessibility to the works on the part of the visitors: these are the strong points of this exhibition.

The itinerary of the visitor, enhanced by the scenography that dominates and characterizes the space, is organized by 32 illuminated panels, the only instrument adopted to present the works, featuring a description of the keys of interpretation of the projects.

A total of ten works are presented, each by 2 or 3 illuminated panels. Each project is presented as a slide in black and white with a concise description, the plans indispensable for understanding it, drawings explaining its birth and from 3 to 5 color slides, each featuring a full-screen photograph.

The presentation owes its density and force to the size of the panels, their luminosity, the contrast between the graphic documents in black and white and the color photographs. The exhibition design thus harmonizes with the architectural approach of Dominique Perrault, because it conveys, with its radical solution, the spirit inspiring the projects, and guides the attention of the visitor to the spatial and visual context rather than suggesting a merely didactic and scenographic approach.

The exhibition, which has been planned as itinerary, will be presented in five continents. After Milan it will be moved to Mexico City to then proceed to North America and Japan. It is conceived to meet essential spatial criteria, in order that it may travel and adapt itself to the different arrangements planned in the various cities.

The fact that it retains its identity despite the different kinds of places where it will be hosted, its adaptability to different interiors, the easy installation and minimal technical equipment make it an ideal instrument of communication, a manifesto of the architecture of Dominique Perrault.
